Herndon was founded in the late eighteen hundreds, and is a charming place to live. Similar to the Town of Vienna, VA, the Town of Herndon is a Township inside of Fairfax County. Herndon was named for a naval explorer, William Lewis Herndon, author of “Exploration of the Valley of the Amazon.” He died in 1857, going down with his ship the S.S. Central America. Captain Herndon’s heroics are said to have prevented many of his passengers and crew from drowning. “Ship of Gold in the Deep Blue Sea” by Gary Kinder (1996) tells the remarkable story of the recovery of this ship and its cargo– billions of dollars’ worth of freshly minted gold coins from the San Francisco Mint. Today Herndon has become a thriving community located near the internationally recognized city of Reston, VA, and is located close to the Dulles Airport International. Each year one of the most enjoyable Northern Virginia festivals of the year is the Herndon Festival. It is a great time and reflective of the welcoming spirit of Herndon. Herndon offers its residents a lot to enjoy within the Town. There is the Herndon Community Center a world class public recreational center that offers everything imaginable to stay fit including an indoor heated pool, sauna and spa. Commuting now to Washington D.C is accelerated when you access the Dulles Toll Rd and will be even more convenient when the Metrorail Silver Line opens.
