Woodbridge, VA is named after a wooden toll bridge built in the late eighteenth century by a historic landowner, Thomas Mason, the son of one of our Founding Fathers, George Mason. After inheriting the land from his father, Thomas named his land Woodbridge.  He did so because he was the one that hired the legendary engineer,Theodore Burr,to design the wood bridge to replace a ferry that carried passengers from his land across the Occoquan River beneath where Rt. 1 is located today.Woodbridge like so many other Northern Virginia suburbs was originally farm land.
In the 1960’s Cecil Hylton put Woodbridge “on the map” when he began developing Dale City. He named the area Dale City because of the hills and dales topography of Dale City.  Like Thomas Mason, Cecil Hylton, was also an amazingly resourceful man. Originally he sold farm produce in Washington D.C. He then started a sod business which required trucking a lot of sod which lead to Hylton’s breakthrough innovation in the sod industry. The baby boom markets lead Hylton into the building business and he built a city, Dale City. He was ahead of his time. He had his own utility companies, a sewer company and his own cable television company. A private company,Virginia American Water, provides Dale City’s water service today because Dale City was there before the Prince William County Service Authority. Virginia American Water is the largest investor owned utility in the State.
