Springfield was named after the many springs discovered around the original Orange and Alexandria Railroad Station in the 19th century. Today that same historic Springfield railroad station is now known as the Springfield/Backlick Road Station of the VRE and it goes from Manassas, VA to Washington D.C. There are two Springfield VRE railroad stations. The second is located not far from the first coming from the direction of Washington DC and is known as the Franconia/Springfield Station, this station goes to Fredericksburg, VA. Both of the VRE railways take their passengers to Union Station in Washington, D.C. which is located a stone’s throw from the United States Capital. Once you arrive at Union Station you can get on board with Amtrak and go almost anywhere in the United States. The VRE also provides you the ability to connect easily with five Metrorail stations located at Franconia-SpringfieldAlexandria (King Street)Crystal CityL’Enfant and Union Station.

Springfield offers one of Northern Virginia’s finest country clubs, the impressive, Springfield Golf and Country Club.  One of the benefits of playing at this beautiful golf course is the opportunity to sharpen your game with the former George Mason University Golf Captain, Ben Hogan.

The Springfield Mall is experiencing a major transformation becoming the magnificent new Springfield Town Center. One of the area’s best kept secrets is Lake Accotink Park where, on any given summer day, you will see your neighbors swimming, canoeing, boat riding, bird watching or playing miniature golf.  The piece de la résistance is the perfectly visible elevated train trestle is on one side of the lake where the children and adults both marvel as it blows its train whistle to the delight of the crowd. Attentive to the sporting interests of Northern Virginia, Springfield is recreationally offering the largest Sports Complex in the area known as The Fairfax Sportsplex. The South Run Recreation Center was expanded in 2008. This attractive multi-story 7000 square foot building has an indoor pool with 2 meter diving boards, spa, saunas, racquetball court, and fitness room.

Two great High Schools, Robert E. Lee home of the Lancers and West Springfield High School home of the Spartans are both located in Springfield.
