The founding of Middleburg was as a result of a real estate transaction that involved one of our Principal Brokers, Josephine Washington Saunders’ relatives, Joseph Chinn, first cousin to George Washington. Powell purchased “Chinn’s Crossroads,” paying Chinn $2.50 per acre. It was then called “PowellTown” but Powell did not like the name, so it was changed to Middleburgh and shortened to Middleburg.
