Lorton is named for a village in England, and is the hometown of Lorton’s founding father, Joseph Plaskett, who operated a general store and the Lorton Valley Post Office in the late 19th Century.

The Native American Indians called Lorton “Pohick,” Algonquin for the “water place”. Today, Lorton is still the water place surrounded by the Potomac River, making Lorton excellent for boating and fishing.

Because Lorton is the last developing area in Fairfax County, there are many newer properties available for sale on any given day within newer developments.

One of the premiere recreational facilities in Lorton today is not limited only to great access to the Potomac River, but admission to Northern Virginia’s newest golf experience – Laurel Hill Golf Club. According to golf journalists, Bill Love, the designer, created a “visually stunning, one-of-a-kind” Golf Club.

The Lazy Susan Dinner Theatre in Lorton is getting excellent reviews, offering its guests dinner and entertainment.  Lorton has lots of great restaurants as well as Shopping!

When it comes to traveling to Washington D.C., Lorton has access to the Nation’s Capital in style – traveling on board the VRE (Virginia Railway Express).

As Lorton continues to grow, it has done so, not forgetting what its very name suggests:  the memory of a small village in England. This Early American and European symmetry with Lorton’s past is, perhaps, that which is helping guide and shape its appeal, both now and in the future.
